Poison Proofing Training

A well-trained dog doesn’t just listen when it’s convenient. It listens when temptation is right in front of its face.

Poison Proofing training teaches your dog to refuse food or substances that do not come from their handler, even when those items are highly tempting. This skill can prevent accidental poisoning, protect against malicious intent, and reinforce strong impulse control in real-world environments.

At our facility, we intentionally train with high-value distractions such as cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and steak. If a dog can ignore those, they can ignore almost anything.

We offer two levels of Poison Proofing training depending on the level of reliability you want from your dog.

Basic Poison Proofing

Basic Poison Proofing focuses on handler-present accountability. Your dog learns that food or objects on the ground — or offered by other people — are completely off limits.

Training includes:

  • Refusing treats from strangers

  • Ignoring food placed on the floor

  • Resisting the urge to snatch dropped food

  • Maintaining impulse control while on leash and within handler reach

This level establishes the foundation of poison proofing and teaches the dog that food only comes from their handler.

Advanced Poison Proofing

Advanced Poison Proofing takes the concept further by introducing independence and integrity when the handler is not present.

Dogs are tested in controlled training environments where food temptations are placed while the handler is outside the room and out of sight. Sessions are monitored on camera to ensure the dog maintains the same discipline even without direct supervision.

Training includes:

  • All Basic Poison Proofing skills

  • On-leash refusal of food from strangers

  • Ignoring high-value food placed on the ground

  • Maintaining discipline without the handler in the room

  • Real-world temptation testing with items like cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and steak

This program builds a level of reliability that goes beyond basic obedience. The dog learns that temptation is not an option — whether the handler is present or not.

Why Poison Proofing Matters

Dogs are naturally opportunistic eaters. Unfortunately, that instinct can put them in danger. Poison proofing training helps protect your dog from:

  • Accidental ingestion of harmful substances

  • Food laced with toxins or medication

  • Dangerous items dropped in public spaces

  • Intentional poisoning attempts

  •

When properly trained, your dog learns a simple rule:

If it didn’t come from my handler, it’s not mine to take.
